Best way to change oil on the Polaris General 1000

The Ranger General 1000 has been designed to allow the owner with limited mechanical skills the ability to perform their own maintenance.  Changing oil on the General requires only one tool, a 6mm allen wrench, and less than 30 minutes.  Before getting started make sure you have the following ready or watch this How To Video.

• 2.5 qts. 5w-50 Synthetic Oil
• oil filter
• 6mm allen wrench
• catch pan

 Begin by removing the drain plug and allowing the oil to drain.  While the oil drains remove the oil filter, located on front of the engine and behind the cab.  The owners manual suggests accessing the oil filter from the drivers side and removing some ducting and hoses.  We were able to remove the oil filter from the passenger side without having to remove anything, but you will have to wait for the exhaust to cool.  There is enough room to get you're right hand and arm to the filter with this method.  The video below shows exactly how to do it.  Once the oil is drained reinstall the drain plug and oil filter and fill to 2.5 quarts oil.  After running the engine for a couple minutes and then allowing it to sit for a couple minutes check the oil level.

 

What you'll need to change all Polaris Ranger GENERAL Fluids at the 25 Hour First Service Interval

So you're new General 1000 has just reached the 25 hour break-in service interval.  Polaris doesn't give these Ranger General's away so it's important to follow their recommendations when it comes to service.  Three fluids need to be changed on this initial service: engine oil, transmission or main gearcase and front differential or front gearcase.

It can sometimes be a challenge to get all the fluids and tools together and just finding the time to complete the service.  We just completed the process and I've listed everything you'll need in order to complete the 25 hour break-in service.  I'd suggest using the Polaris recommended fluids at least until the warranty expires as it may save you from footing the bill for repairs.

Tools:

• 6mm allen wrench (oil drain plug)
• 8mm allen wrench (transmission & front differential drain & fill plugs)

Required for Engine:

• 2.5 qts. 5w-50 synthetic oil
• oil filter

• 1.3 qts. Polaris AGL Fluid

Required for Front Differential (Front Gearcase)

• 7.5 ounces Polaris Demand Drive Fluid

Brute Force 650 Oil Change: 1.85 qts. Capacity

This article explains how to change oil on a Brute Force 650, including tools needed, the oil capacity and a free "how to" video.  Our demonstration was preformed on a 2013 BF, but will work for all year models of the Brute Force 650 and the older Prairie 650.  Before getting started make sure to have the following on hand: 17mm socket, oil drain pan, 2 quarts of oil and oil filter.

Begin by warming the engine up, either driving it around or letting it idle until the fan kicks on.  Next remove the 17mm oil drain plug, located near the center of the middle skid plate.  Let the oil drain completely, it may take 10-15 minutes.  Next remove the automotive style oil filter, located on front of the engine, turn it counter clockwise to remove.  Next reinstall the 17mm drain plug and oil filter.  We installed a Wix 51358 oil filter for this Brute Force 650.  You will now need to fill the engine with 1.85 quarts of oil.  Many folks have their own preference of oil and the chart is recommendations from the Owner's Manual.

Polaris Ranger 800 Transmission Rear Differential or Main Gearcase Oil Change: Capacity 1.1 Quart or 34 Oz.

The 2010 Polaris Ranger 800 transmission and rear diff oil run in what Polaris refers to as the main gearcase on the Rangers and oil capacity is relatively small at  34 oz. or 1.1 qt. AGL Fluid.  This oil change is relatively quick, but is messy and awkward getting to the drain plug and fill plug.  Removing the rear passenger side tire would allow better access to the plugs.  This article and the free video explains how to change the oil.

Before you get started make sure to have whats needed to complete the job.
- 8mm allen wrench    - 1.1 qt Polaris AGL Fluid    - oil catch pan   -flexible funnel or hose   - rags  

Before removing the drain plug on your Ranger drive it around for 15 minutes or longer to heat the transmission-rear diff or main gearcase oil.  Now remove the oil Drain Plug with a 8 mm allen Wrench and attempt to catch as much oil as possible.  This part made a mess on our Ranger 800 skid plate.  After draining remove the Fill Plug with the 8mm allen wrench.  The tricky part is getting the new oil back into the gearcase.  Some have claimed to fill through the vent hose, but we filled through the Fill Plug opening.  Our AGL Fluid came with a nozzle that was applied after removing the cap and breaking the seal.  After installing the nozzle we cut the tip and placed a foot piece of clear hose on it to feed into the case.  Our Polaris Ranger 800 used 1 quart, although specs claimed 1.1 quarts.

Polaris Ranger 800 Oil Change

To change oil on the Polaris Ranger 800 it requires only a hand full of tools.  The process is very easy and it will take more time sourcing the oil filter and oil than actually doing the oil change.  I'll describe exactly how to do this...

Before getting started make sure to have the following supplies and tools on hand.
- 6mm Allen wrench
- drain pan
- oil filter
- 2 qts oil or 1.9 liters
- oil filter

After warming the engine up remove the 6mm allen head drain plug as shown in the video.  In the video we ran into a problem, the oil had lots of moisture in it.  After the foamy oil drained out we got scattered and forgot to show the oil filter removal location. If you're does not look contaminated you can now remove the spin on filter located in the front of the engine, accessible on the driver side, in front of the rear tire.  Once all the oil has drained reinstall the 6mm drain plug and oil filter.  You may want to lube the o-ring on the oil filter prior to install.  Once the oil filter is installed, fill the engine with 2 quarts of oil, let it settle, check the dipstick and you're ready to ride!  I've included some options below for gathering whats needed for the Ranger 800 oil change.

How to change oil Kawasaki 400 Bayou 4x4

Changing the oil on the 400 Bayou is a simple task and very crucial to its long term reliability.   Mostly due to the incorporation of the hassle free spin on style oil filter and sight glass oil level gauge.  The only tool required for this job is a 17mm socket and ratchet.  To start, remove the 17mm drain plug located in the middle of the belly skid plate.  As the oil is draining remove the oil filter by turning it counter clockwise.  I like the Wix filters, part number 51358.  Replace the oil filter and reinstall the drain plug.  Make sure you have at least 4 quarts of wet clutch compatible oil on hand.  This oil is often stamped motorcycle or atv oil which contains the friction additive.  You will find the case to be stamped with 3.7 liters, which is equivalent to almost four quarts.  Pour 3 quarts in and then begin gradually adding the 4th quart, checking the sight glass until its just below the upper mark.  Now start the Bayou and let it idol for a couple minutes.  Turn it off and then wait a couple minutes for the oil to drain back down and then recheck the oil sight glass.
